Editing

Posted by Michael Ian Black Thursday, June 25th, 2009

So now we're editing, which means we're putting together everything we shot into an actual TV show instead of just hours of footage of Showalter forgetting his lines. The way you edit is load everything onto super computers and then nocturnal people with big eyes use magic to make into it a movie.

So far, the editing is going well. We've got first cuts of all of the episodes, which is good considering we start airing in less than a month. Our goal is to have everything pretty much done by the end of June so that if time shrinks it'll still be ready for our July 15th premiere. (By "time shrinks," I meant the literal shrinkage of time-space, which is also one theoretical way you would travel at warp speed.)

I will say that I'm thrilled to be done with shooting. Shooting is hard work, and as I get older I realize more and more that I was not cut out for that sort of thing. Easy work, yes. Shooting Klondike commercials, for example. That's pretty easy work. Writing, acting, directing, and producing? Not as easy. So it's good to be onto the final phase of our show.

Increasingly the question in our minds is: will anybody watch? Fortunately I have little control over that, so it's not something I spend a lot of time worrying about. I would say I worry as much about how many people will watch as I do about the state of Jon and Kate's marriage, which is to say I worry about it, but not so much that it's affecting my appetite.

Hey guys, been following the shows blog ever since I heard (not literally, more like read) that it got picked up by CC (my own clever acronym for Comedy Central). Stella was probably the best thing to happen to television since scrambled porn. Can't wait to see what you guys, Michael "Showtime" Showalter and Michael "Ian" Black, can do without that big headed David "I'm too good for cable now that I've directed a reasonably successful movie specifically Role Models. Yes I have to mention the name because it was reasonably successful and I directed it" Wain. Best of luck guys. No pressure, but you'd better not disappoint your fans.

I am looking forward to your show, and as a huge Stella fan I am really happy you guys will be back on comedy central. I am wondering though, where is David Wain?

I saw one of the promos for the new show (with your mention of caballeros) and it was so good I rewinded (rewound?) and watched a few times. Each time, I laughed out loud.
Good luck with the new show, I hope lots of people watch. I know that I am looking forward to its premiere. It will give me something to do while I battle this recurrent yeast infection. ;)

I'll be watching. I'll be watching you.

Yeah, we can see that nothing but nothing affects that huge appetite of yours, Fatty.

This blog has been educational for us laymen, or as you people call us, "the regular folk". Seriously, it has. Thanks to you, Sho, and Stephie for keeping the fans in the loop throughout the exciting process.

At times it's depressing for us "regular folk" to read all about it though. There you all are, laughing and pointing and eating cake. Here we all are in our stuffy offices listening to coworkers hack up tobacco stained phlegm.

At least I now know another trade secret. Editors have magical Marty Feldmann eyes.
